The Fish River Sun resort near Port Alfred, Eastern Cape, has proudly retained its prestigious Gold Crown Status, awarded by global leisure and travel service provider, RCI.

Fish River Sun-Entrance-00021

Only 5% of RCI Resorts Worldwide attain Gold Crown Status, after undergoing a rigorous rating and assessment process. “The award was given for the period from September 2008 to August 2009,” says senior manager – Business Development (Africa) at RCI, Tony Hazel. “There is a comprehensive rating programme for all of our resorts which we put together using feedback from our guests about their experiences.”

RCI Gold Crown Status is awarded to resorts recognized for excellence and consistent quality in hospitality and accommodation, and the Fish River Sun is one of only 60 Resorts in South Africa that has managed to maintain the necessary standards to retain this prestigious status.

“We are very pleased to have earned Gold Crown Status again this year,” says Wessel Benson, Operations Manager at the Fish River Sun. The resort was first given Gold Crown Status in 2002, and has successfully achieved this rating on a yearly basis since then. A highlight for the resort was being nominated for Resort of the Year on 2009. Benson says, “All staff must be congratulated for this achievement, as without them, this would not be possible. Our aim is to create a fun-filled, family resort with the highest quality service, accommodation, food and activities. We treat our guests with the utmost care.”

The resort is superbly positioned, approximately mid way between Port Elizabeth and East London, and boasts 40 spacious timeshare units. Each unit overlooks the pristine Gary Player designed golf course, and allows for glimpses of the Indian Ocean amidst the dunes. The Fish River Sun prides itself on the host of sporting and leisure activities available to guests, including a heated swimming pool, squash courts, and sports green. The popular Camp Davis venue, on the banks of Old Woman’s River that runs through the resort, houses canoes, dune boards, fishing equipment, umbrellas, braai facilities and a bar for guests to enjoy.

Continuing to be ranked in the top 30 in South Africa, the Gary Player golf course is considered a must-play course; and the hotel offers top quality conference and banqueting facilities. “We are equipped for many types of events including weddings, presentations and extended weekend conferences, “ says Benson.

In the past 5 to 6 years, there has been significant activity in the arts and culture scene of the Eastern Cape, in particular in the Nelson Mandela bay, with some of our local artists being signed with Johannesburg based recording companies. However, there is still much work to be done to develop the local art and artists of the Nelson Mandela Bay and Eastern Cape. Specifically, there has been a realization that more professional and consistent platforms need to be created if the growth and development of our artists is to be sustained. It is not a question of doubt that the arts and culture of a city is the life and soul of that particular city.

For such artistic development, big and small business, government, and other private and public sector organizations have a critical role to play to promote artists development and consequently the Province and Nelson Mandela Bay. The development of arts would be a futile attempt without the involvement of the above-mentioned.

To address this, Ngqishela Entertainment Events and Artist Management CC is organizing the Fourth Annual Soul Elevator which will take place on 3 and 4 April 2010. The two-day event will be aimed at presenting some of the developed and developing artists from Nelson Mandela bay and Buffalo City. The main aim of this event is, therefore to showcase the growth of our home-grown artists in their different fields and genres.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

• To showcase the talent within the Eastern Cape
• To promote and highlight the role of arts and culture in the province;
• To educate and elevate people’s souls through music, poetry and art;
• To provide a platform that requires professionalism from artists (Training);
• To provide a networking opportunity between business and the artists.

Amanda Scheepers from Marina Sea Salt and Etienne Calitz, BayFM DJ and owner of the South African Restaurant, are looking for the tastiest potjie recipe in the Eastern Cape.

Amanda Scheepers from Marina Sea Salt and Etienne Calitz, BayFM DJ and owner of the South African Restaurant, are looking for the tastiest potjie recipe in the Eastern Cape.

The traditional potjie meal is as South African as boerewors and biltong. Ingredients of chicken, mutton or venison, hot or mild, spicy or plain – the potjie is as diverse as the people of South Africa and each cook brings their own unique flavour and style. Those who think they have mastered the art of potjie should enter the “Roer-my-nie’ potjie competition, organised and sponsored by Marina Sea Salt and The South African Restaurant, to be held during the 2010 Kirkwood Wildlife Festival from 4 to 6 June.

“This is the first time the Wildlife festival will host a potjie competition and we are excited to see what the potjie kings and queens of the Sunday’s River Valley can produce,” says festival co-ordinator, Jenni Honsbein.

Entrants enter a team of four who will compete for points not only in the taste of the potjie, but also for presentation of the stall and the dish, as well as the overall spirit of the team. The potjie dishes will be adjudicated by a panel of judges from catering companies, chefs, and even BayFM DJs, with an array of prizes from Exclusive Foods, Newton Park Spar, Distell and Lutzville Wineries, Safari Firelighters and Marina Sea Salt.

So those that can stick to the golden rule of potjie, “Roer-my-nie!”, should rush to book one of the 40 spaces at the 2010 Absa Kirkwood Wildlife Festival potjie jamboree. For bookings or more information, contact Amanda Scheepers at 041 463 1100 or amanda@salt.co.za

The Absa Kirkwood Wildlife festival gets bigger every year and 2010 is no exception with live performances by some of South Africa’s most popular performers including Kurt Darren, Prime Circle, the Soweto String Quartet, Dozi and Nianell, Emo Adams and Juanita du Plessis. It’s also home to the Eastern Cape’s biggest live game auction and car expo; the finest wine and gourmet food tasting; the Isuzu 4×4 challenge, competitions and over 300 original food, clothing, crafts and novelty stalls.

Entry fees for the festival on Friday and Sunday are R60 for adults and R30 for children; and R80 for adults and R40 for children on Saturday.
