Internationally acclaimed motivational speaker, Lewis Pugh, will be making an appearance in Port Elizabeth as a guest of the Animal Welfare Society and Born Free Foundation. Affectinately known as the Humal Polar Bear for his unbelievable open water swims around the world, Pugh will be in Port Elizabeth for a breakfast talk and book signing session on the 20th August 2010.

One of the busiest international motivational speakers on the circuit, Pugh is fresh from his death defying swim under the summit of Mt Everest. Against all odds and proving that nothing is impossible, Pugh swam a distance of 1km in just his swim trunks at an altitude of 5,300m on the summit of the world’s tallest mountain. In completing the swim in under 23min, Pugh was able to physically do something that, before now, everyone said was impossible.

Whether your a sports enthusiast or a business leader, Pugh delivers a very powerful and inspiring story of having a vision in life, the value of goal setting, courage, perseverance, self motivation, harnessing the full power of the mind, leadership, teamwork, overcoming setbacks, leaving an enduring legacy, and of course protecting our fragile world.

The morning fundraiser will include breakfast, a talk by Lewis Pugh and a Diamond Raffle Draw for a R15000 diamond. This will be followed by a book signing session with autographed books available for purchase. If you haven’t seen the Human Polar Bear in the flesh, then this is an opportunity which you wouldn’t wnat to miss!

Your donation of R225 for standard and R275 for Golden Circle tickets to AWS and BF will not only leave you in awe of this giant of a man, but you’ll leave inspired, motivated and ready to tackle the world.

From 6-8 August, the NMMU campus will be reverberating with the sound of about 250 young musicians who will be participating in TwoTone Music’s first Mandela Bay Fest of Sound. The event is a brand new platform for young talent to perform, interact and learn from a panel of distinguished specialists from as far afield as South America.
This year, the theme is ‘Making Music, Making History’ and the aim is to educate young players about their role as performers – past, present and future, with specific focus on their role in music development and their societies in general. The festival coincides with the international centennial celebration of the concert band.

The series of workshops and performances, hosted by the Mandela Bay Symphonic Wind Orchestra (MBSWO) under the baton of TwoTone’s Gareth Williams, will take place at the NMMU South Campus, with a special heritage field trip to Red Location Museum where the participating ethnic ensembles will perform on Saturday 7th August.
On Saturday 7th August (18h30), a jazz night featuring top young jazz combos from the Bay and East London will take place at the NMMU South Campus Auditorium. Included in the lineup will be TwoTone’s latest crowd pleaser, the Mandela Bay Big Band (MB3) which was launched during the World Cup period and received great acclaim for its ‘proudly South African’ repertoire. A guest performance by East London’s Stirling High Big Band directed by Alan Webster, festival director of the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz festival will also be featured.

On Sunday 8th (17h00), a Gala Concert featuring highlights from participating wind ensembles, orchestras and ethnic ensembles from across the Eastern Cape and from Cape Town, will feature brand new South African compositions and arrangements by SA composers Peter-Louis van Dijk and Michael Viljoen. A massed band performance will be conducted by Gareth Williams (MBSWO), Peter-Louis van Dijk and head adjudicator Gustavo Fontana from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Other specialists participating in the event include internationally renowned percussionist Magda De Vries, Rhodes ethnomusicology enthusiast Gareth Walwyn, and NMMU jazz lecturer John Edwards. Various instrumental specialists from across the country will be involved in rehearsals and master classes, including Prof Erik Albertyn (NMMU) and Sean Kiermann (Cape Philharmonic Youth Wind Ensemble).

The Port Elizabeth Gilbert & Sullivan Society in collaboration with Magnetic Storm and Algoa FM brings you the hit show High School Musical in July/August 2010.

High School Musical has taken the world by storm and tells a classic teenage love story set against the age old school yard conflicts between the basketball jocks, the science club brainiacs and the drama club divas at East High. This vibrant show is brought to life by a multi-award winning creative team headed by Robin Williams as Director. Garth Tavares is Musical Director and Candice Johnstone choreographs the energetic dance sequences.

The hot, young, local cast stars Jason Humm as Troy Bolton and Tiffany Oosthuizen as Gabriella Montez. Tiffany makes her G&S debut as the sweet and super intelligent Gabriella whilst Jason is well known to audiences after his roles in Showtime and My Fair Lady. Viewers of the M-Net reality show “High School Musical: Spotlight on South Africa” will remember Jason’s plucky performance as he made it through several rounds of the series despite having a broken leg.

These two are ably supported by Jaydee Mulder and Kaylan Sabbadin as Ryan and Sharpay Evans, the resident stars of the school stage. Other roles are played by Gabby Oosthuizen as Taylor, Masinga Rune as Chad, Damien Anderson as Jack Scott, Rose Cowpar as Ms Darbus , Joe Erasmus as Coach, Rebecca Hartle as Kelsi , Cameron Robertson as Rippa , Joel Tommy as Zeke and Rebecca Wood as the Hip-Hop loving Martha.

Bookings for the show are at Computicket at R120 a seat with vouchers available from cast memebers at a reduced rate of R100 a seat.

For more information contact production secretary Shan Sabbadin on 082 778 7705.
