Temporary closure of the Action Bar won’t stop the fun at Boardwalk!

Development at The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World reached the halfway mark with the opening of the brand new smoking casino in December 2011.

The next phase of the extensive development plan kicked off with the temporary closure of the popular Boardwalk Action Bar on Sunday, 15 January. The venue will be closed for the next six months while it undergoes a complete revamp. When it reopens in June, visitors will be greeted by a fresh, new-look and feel in the Action Bar and an exciting entertainment line up.

However, while the construction team work on the venue, regular patrons of this popular entertainment facility will still be catered for. They will be able to watch all major sport matches on a big screen in the Vodacom Amphitheatre, and will be able to order drinks from the fully equipped bar.

The Amphitheatre will also host a number of exciting South African artists and acts during 2012 from comedians, to well known musicians from a number of genres. First up on 17 February is Afrikaans singer Kurt Darren.

The equally popular Thursday night Karaoke sessions with John V will in future be held at The Lighthouses Bowling Centre from Thursday, 19 January at 20h30. As always, this fun evening allows participants to test their vocal ability with a long list of well loved songs to choose from.

The Boardwalk has always been a fervent supporter of local talent and live shows will continue to take place in the retail area, with performances every Saturday evening from 18h00 to 21h00 and on Sunday afternoons from 13h00 to 16h00. This entertainment showcase offers talented home-grown artists an opportunity to display their skill and talents.

And to escape the heat of summer, there is no cooler place to be than in one of the restaurants in the retail area, overlooking the lake while sipping cocktails.

During 2012, The Boardwalk will be the place to be for the very best entertainment mix in Port Elizabeth.

Clive Taverner, the voice of Tavcor, celebrates 40 years of service this year. Clive joined his father, Ray Taverner, in 1971 at the family run VW and Audi motor dealership, then known as Embassy Motors. In partnership with his elder brother Alan, they have successfully grown the Tavcor Motor Group in Port Elizabeth and George.

Looking back over the years at how the industry has changed, Clive Taverner remembers vehicles like the Beetle and the old Kombi. He comments, “The motor vehicle range was very basic with straight forward engineering back then. It is remarkable how the technology has advanced and continues to so rapidly.”

Clive began personally endorsing Tavcor’s product offerings on radio 20 years ago and is well known for his marketing achievements, including the Eastern Cape Marketer of the Year award from the Institute of Marketing Management.

Clive has been a leading figure in the used car industry and has played a significant role in developing a trustworthy industry in the Port Elizabeth area. His efforts to supply the PE market with the best conditioned used cars at affordable prices have benefitted many in his 40 years of service.

This pioneer of reliable, trustworthy motoring in our region remains the voice of Tavcor on the radio and a leading figure in the Tavcor Motor Group business. With significant expansion plans underway to provide a state of the art VW dealership on the William Moffet, Clive remains the main driver in the used car operations as well as a great leader. His tough, no-nonsense methods of growing people have resulted in a professional sales team that live the Tavcor value ‘Drive’.

Clive’s dedication is also evident in his commitment to clay target shooting where he has had the honour of wearing the ‘green and gold’ in France and in the USA.

Clive Taverner is proud that as a company, “We constantly prove to ourselves that we don’t have to stand in the shadow of major dealerships in metropolitan areas like Cape Town and Johannesburg.”

The ice rink, erected at The Boardwalk for the December holiday season, has been temporarily closed for repairs after technical problems were experienced with freezing process over the weekend.

All the fun of a winter wonderland in this special glass-sided marquee will continue on Friday, 16 December as repairs are underway and the ice rink will reopen operating from 9am to 10pm weekdays and from 9am to 11pm over weekends.

The ice rink has been well received especially by smaller visitors that have grown particularly fond of Bobby the Seal, a skate-aid that assists them to navigate around the ice safety guided by an adult.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but can reassure the public we will be up and running smoothly in time for the kick-off of the festive season this Friday,” says General Manager of the Boardwalk, Clifford Ngakane.

Port Elizabeth electric blues band, the Jack Rabbit Slims have been invited to open for Chicago-based blues star, Liz Mandeville at this year’s Durban International Blues Festival.

The Jack Rabbit Slims is fronted by the talented Rob Thompson on guitar, vocals and occasionally, the blues harp. Thompson is supported by bassist, Andrew Warneke and Marcel Scullard on drums. Heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Dan Patlansky, the band has made a name for itself in the Eastern Cape and is hoping to wow Durban crowds.

“In between our original songs, we like to throw in a cover or two,” says Thompson.

“We’ve been working on our originals to offer an all-round electric blues experience to our audience. Expect to hear intricate guitar solos, solid bass grooves and tasteful, yet ‘ballsy’ drumming! We have a truly unique, but still vintage blues sound,” says Thompson. This is the third year in a row that the band has been invited to perform at the Durban International Blues festival, and they are looking forward to leaving their mark on the Durban music scene.

“There have been a few changes to the band lately, with Marcel stepping in on drums and Andrew coming in on bass. I think we have a really solid and soulful sound,” says Thompson. Thompson recently returned from a month-long tour of Ohio and surrounding areas where he performed with US blues great, Ray Fuller.
