Absa has renewed its partnership with the Kirkwood Wildsfees for the next five years, following a three-year partnership with the flagship event.

In support of the festival’s key focus areas, which are conservation, eco-tourism, education and wildlife, the five-year partnership gives Absa naming rights to the festival from 2011 to 2015.

“Absa’s partnership with the festival through its naming rights over the past three years has seen the festival grow from strength to strength. It is now top-of-mind for most Eastern Capers, as well as visitors to the province. Absa believes that owing to the excellent festival planning, implementation, financial controls and strategic partnerships, the Absa Kirkwood Wildsfees will be embedded forever in the Eastern Cape’s legacy,” said Stanton du Plessis, general manager Absa Business Bank, Absa Eastern and Southern Cape.

In a major boost to the country-wide “Incubator Campaign,” Algoa FM has pledged all proceeds from its annual charity golf day to go towards the purchase of a much-needed incubator for Dora Nginza Hospital’s newborns.

Dora Nginza post-natal ward in Port Elizabeth will be guaranteed to have at least one brand new incubator by April this year.

The golf day will be held on March 01. “If the golf day doesn’t cover the full purchase amount, we will pay in the difference as part of our commitment to the Port Elizabeth community,” says Algoa FM managing director, Dave Tiltmann.

This year, Algoa FM is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a number of charity events including a partnership with Pick ‘n Pay and The Herald to help raise funds for more incubators for Dora Nginza. “We are hoping to be able to purchase a total of six incubators to the value of R500 000 by the end of the February,” says Tiltmann. The incubator that is purchased through the golf day will be the first of the six to be delivered. Algoa FM is challenging other businesses in the province to step up and contribute towards the campaign by either purchasing an incubator, or and encouraging their employees to make a difference by purchasing the R10 donation vouchers available at all Pick n Pay till points.

Since its inception, Algoa FM has raised over R1 million for various Eastern Cape charities through its annual charity golf days. The Algoa Cares charity, started in 1997, has raised over R2,5 million and 9700 litres of blood in the frequent blood drives promoted by the station. “We are proud to be known as a radio station that genuinely cares for its listeners,” says Tiltmann.

Top South African cyclist Carla Swart’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service in Port Elizabeth on Thursday, February 3.

Fellow cyclists are expected to gather at The Boardwalk Casino’s Vodacom Amphitheatre at 4.30pm.

Swart, 23, was killed when she turned in front of an oncoming truck during a training ride in the Free State on January 19.

“It was Carla’s dream to represent South Africa at the world championships and she did us proud on and off the bike while living her dream,” said the director of Cycling South Africa’s road commission Hendrik Lemmer.

Last year, Swart placed 10th in the women’s race at the World Road Championships in Australia and eighth at the Commonwealth Games in India a week later.

She joined the American-based HTC-Highroad professional team this year and was considered one of the country’s best hopes for an Olympic medal in 2012.

Swart’s memorial service is timed to coincide with the South African Road Championships and The Herald VW Cycle Tour national classic the day after, as many of the country’s top cyclists will converge on Nelson Mandela Bay for these events.

The national championships take place from February 2 to 5 and The Herald VW Cycle Tour on February 5 and 6.

The Boardwalk will also play host to The Herald VW Cycle Tour’s pre-event expo and registration. Riders can register at the Tsitsikamma Conference Centre on Friday, February 4, from 9am to 7pm or Saturday, February 5, from 9am to 5pm.
