The Annual Port Elizabeth Gilbert & Sullivan Society Valentine’s cabaret is now in its fourth year and holds a special place on the G&S calendar.
As our major fundraiser for the year, everyone involved gives of their time and talent for the cause and it has proven a winner with audiences. This year Rose Cowpar once again directs a fabulous cast singing and dancing their way through some of your all time favourite songs. We take you on a tour of Broadway, a trip down memory lane and a top 40 tango. The seating is cabaret style so all the audience needs to do is sit, sing along and enjoy a drink or two while you snack on your picnic basket.
This year we have introduced a dance floor and the show is designed to get audiences up out of their seats for everything from a slow dance to a partying final act. It’s definitely not all schmaltzy love songs, there’s something for everyone including Come Fly With Me, Valerie, Copacabana, It’s Raining Men, Dream a Little Dream, Teenage Dream, L.O.V.E, Somewhere Out There and, of course, All You Need is Love.
Our cast this year features some familiar faces from our 2011 productions. Ace Magxaki appears fresh from his stellar performances in Beauty and the Beast, Legends of Broadway and Oklahoma and has just been announced as the winner of this year’s Showtime Award for Best Actor in a Musical. Anton Crouse appeared in Oklahoma and returns for his second Valentine’s Cabaret. Melissa Jantjies, the giggling Gertie in Oklahoma, and 2011 Best Novice Chorus Award winner Jade du Toit are joined by their fellow cast member from Legends of Broadway, Mandisa Tiso the pocket powerhouse. Bennie Gerber, Cecile Jansen and Stephen Coetzee who appeared in Fiela’s Child join us and our resident Musical Director Richard Campbell steps out in style to sing a couple of numbers. Rose Cowpar will get you laughing as always, the Savoy Singers showcase their new material and we have much more in store!
We’re also very proud to be hosting a fundraiser for Maranatha Children’s Home on the 15th February when half the proceeds will go to this amazing haven for homeless and at-risk children. The kids are very excited to see Harrison Nash, their Fundraiser and Social Worker extraordinaire give us a taste of his amazing Sinatra numbers.
This year we have 4 shows to choose from on the 14th, 15th, 17th and 18th February at 7.30pm. Tickets have remained at just R80 for the last 2 years or book a table of 8 for only R600. As a special treat, on Valentine’s Day 14/2/12 we are offering a delicious 3 course meal for only R100 per person in addition to the show ticket although patrons are welcome to bring along snacks that evening.
Tickets are available by calling Rose Cowpar on 072 906 1977.
