The Herald Flexider Friendly City Marathon has found a new home, Altona Primary School in Greenbushes. “The principal Tertius Kriek and his staff have bent over backwards to assist us and the venue allows for improved vehicle and route access and parking facilities,” said Achilles Race Convener Tommy Satchwell. He added that the school has also been host to high profile cycle races and that the well oiled Achilles team and dedicated race sponsors will ensure a successful event.
The event includes a 42.2km marathon, a 10km road race and a 5km fun run to cater for the distance runners, for athletes wanting to improve their times or for family fun runners just wanting to spend some quality time together. Together with third time sponsors Flexider the organizing committee from Achilles will once again be staging the event on Saturday 28 January 2012. The Herald Spec Savers Miss Port Elizabeth Nandi Mnuna charity for the year is Masinyusane Development Organisation and this initiative together with Altona Primary School will benefit from awareness and funds raised through the Friendly City Marathon. The participation league marathon has a cut off of five and a half hours and the 10km has a cut off of 100 minutes. Runners will be lining up for the marathon at 5am with the 10km at 6:30am and the 5km event starting at 07:30am. The first 500 finishers in the marathon, 400 finishers in the 10km & 5km will receive medals. All participants will also be eligible for the fantastic lucky draw prizes.
The cost is R65 per athlete for the marathon, R35 for the 10km and R20 for the 5km fun run. The temporary license for the marathon and 10km is R25 per person. Participants over 65 years of age entry fee is reduced by 50%.
